Poncelet, Jean-Victor

   military figure, mathematician
   Born in Metz, Jean-Victor Poncelet, upon finishing at the École polytechnique, joined the engineering corps of the army and during the Russian campaign (1812) was taken prisoner and held at Saratov. without the help of a text, he dedicated himself to mathematical studies and prepared a large revision of geometry. In 1822, he published his Traité des propriétés projectives des figures, which marked the beginning of projective geometry. He published also a treatise on mechanics dealing with the propagation of movements. A general in 1848, he served as director of the École polytechnique (1848-50), was elected to the Constituent Assembly and, having refused to serve the second empire, went into retirement (1852). Poncelet was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1834.
